Since Independence, the Government of India have
been striving hard to ameliorate the conditions of the weaker sections of the
society through planned process and special focus. In order to give impetus to
its efforts, Government have reconstituted the erstwhile Ministry of Welfare as
the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to ensure social justice and
equity for all and to make necessary efforts to improve the economic conditions
of the most disadvantaged and deprived sections of the society.
The efforts of this Ministry are oriented
towards empowering the weaker sections with a view to make them self-reliant.
All the programmes and policies of this Ministry have been suitably amended,
wherever necessary, to give more focused attention to meet the challenge so that
while ushering the new millennium, the unequal distribution is, if not
eliminated, substantially reduced and the socially disadvantaged and
marginalised sections of the Society are able to enhance their skills and
capacities for ensuring their development and integration into the mainstream.
